The 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Southwestern Haiti is bigger than the devastating earthquake of 2010. Thankfully, it was in a less populated region but the cities of Les Cayes and Jeremie combined have around 400,000 people who have been extremely impacted by the earthquake and an additional million people who were moderately to severely impacted. Heavy rain from tropical depression Grace added insult to injury by dropping up to 15 inches of rain in the same part of the country affected by the earthquake. Hurricane season has just begun, so secure housing is imperative as well as clean water to prevent cholera or other water-born illnesses.
We have been working with our Haitian partners to respond:
- Heart to Heart International – Haiti: Mobile medical clinic that has been visiting rural communities in the affected area and seeing hundreds of patients injured by the earthquake.
- Food for the Poor: covering shipping costs to deliver medical supplies donated by Brother’s Brother as well as getting food, tents, & tarps to families in the region.
- Eglise Methodiste d’Haiti: rice, beans, oil, and tarps are being distributed by local pastors, including Pastor Admirable whom we’ve worked with for many years in Petit-Goave.
- Healing Waters: funding to repair broken water systems, as well as increase productivity with solar power to get clean water access to more people.
While the reality of the disaster continues to unfold, we will work towards responding to the needs on the ground. From the emergency medical response to long-term rebuilding, Resurrection will continue to stand with our Haitian friends.
Check back as information will be updated as we learn more. Please keep these amazing and resilient people in your prayers.
