Greetings Resurrection West,

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! Melissa and Finn and I traveled to East Texas to celebrate Thanksgiving with Melissa’s side of the family. Preparing for the Thanksgiving feast is an intense process for many families, and ours is no exception. I was Cajun frying a turkey next to my brother-in-law as he grilled steaks and sausage, and just a few feet from where my mother in law was fixing several sides simultaneously. All those smells mixed and mingled, and the aroma was absolutely mouthwatering.

The only problem? Food was still a long way away.

We still had guests who had not arrived, and some dishes were far from done. It was a moment of mouthwatering anticipation.

I think that’s a pretty good picture of the season we are in right now. For the Church, this is the season of Advent – of anticipation and preparation and looking ahead to the celebration of Christmas.

Maybe you are looking ahead to Candlelight Christmas Eve, or the joy of reuniting with family, or presents – or even just a break from work for a few days. This is a season where we look ahead to something that is coming, knowing that our anticipation now amplifies our joy later. Here at Resurrection West, we’ve set the stage with our decorations, a gourmet hot chocolate station (with a new twist this weekend), and some exciting events coming throughout the month of December to get us ready for Christmas.

The first (and biggest) event is our Merry Little Christmas this coming Saturday, December 4, from 5:30-7:30pm. We will have a living nativity, a chance to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and a chance to live into the Christmas story by blessing others. All are welcome, but if you know you are coming on Saturday, would you RSVP to let us know?

I’ll add a personal request here – we’ve been growing faster these past few weeks, and we want to make sure we have enough volunteers to ensure a great experience for all our guests. Would you consider volunteering for the Merry Little Christmas event to help our neighbors get in the spirit for Christmas? Volunteers may serve the full event or half, and roles include:

· Greeting/Wayfinding
· Refilling station supplies
· Serving cake pops
· Assisting Santa & Mrs. Claus
· Being a living nativity character

(If you and your family are interested, sign up here or contact christie.walker@cor.org if you have any questions.)

Follow up the Merry Little Christmas event by joining us on Sunday for a bit of fun in worship – it’s time for our Ugly Christmas Sweater competition at Resurrection West! Wear your best (worst) sweater to worship for fun and a chance to win a prize! (Warning: Jerseys for NFL teams other than the Chiefs may be considered as submissions to the ugly sweater competition!)

As I close, I’d like to thank all of you who have submitted your commitment cards during our stewardship series. While these are primarily an act of worship, they do help us plan strategically for the year ahead. If you haven’t had a chance to do that, you can fill out a digital version of the card.

I hope you have a great week, and I’ll see you at our Merry Little Christmas!
