During this three-week series we will explore definitions of some of the words and phrases used in Resurrection's Vision for Racial Justice, and discuss practical ways to build community and address injustice.
The class will stream live online on Wednesday evenings, July 29 – August 12, from 6:30-8:15pm, with breakout room discussions to follow on Zoom. Anyone is welcome, even if you didn't attend the initial Beloved Community class, so invite your friends!
Week 1: What does it mean to say, “Black Lives Matter”?
We'll discuss the choice of using Black Lives Matter in our Vision for Racial Justice statement and unpack why this statement lands differently on people. Why do Christians hear this mantra so differently?
Week 2: Systemic Racism and Unpacking Whiteness
We'll look at how racism affects our communities on both a personal and systemic level, and dive deeper into how our society privileges whiteness as the norm. We'll also take a look at one significant example of systemic racism in our country, the mass incarceration of Black people, and what we can do about it.
Week 3: Next Steps - Becoming Antiracist
To create a truly beloved community, it is not enough for us to simply be “not racist,” our actions must be anti-racist. We'll discuss what that means and learn how antiracist actions can change lives, transform communities and renew the Church.
