A Church in Motion

Hello Resurrection OP!

I hope you are having a good Friday. I am trying to enjoy the wonderful, warm weather we are having before the temperature drops. This week I had the opportunity to visit the Shawnee Mission School District annual kickoff for churches, organizations, and businesses that partner to support, encourage, and equip students in our community. I also visited the City Council subcommittee meeting that discussed an important non-discrimination order coming before the city council aimed at protecting LGBTQ persons from discriminatory policies. One of the things I love about being a pastor is the opportunity to participate in the life of our community. I was grateful to see many of you at these events, too.

I love seeing a church in motion, active and engaged in public life. I’ve seen many of you out and about in a local coffee shop or the farmer’s market or your businesses. The way you share and live your faith inspires me!

This weekend in worship we’re stepping away from our sermon series on the Ten Commandments to focus on suicide prevention. Pastor Adam will share a hope-filled message and we’ll hear from professionals offering guidance on how to identify and help those who struggle with suicidal thoughts. You may struggle with these thoughts or you may know someone who does. With the suicide rate up 33% since 2001, this will be an important message. I hope you will invite someone to join you on Sunday at 9:30 or 11 am.

This weekend begins National Suicide Prevention Week. The month of September is National Suicide Month. An important resource to have on hand is the national suicide prevention hotline. You might take a moment to enter it into your phone. You never know when it may save a life. The number is 800-273-8255. For additional resources, including counseling and support groups, visit cor.org/suicide.

Rezlife Student Ministry on Wednesdays!

Students, join us as we launch on Wednesday, September 11. Middle School, grades 6 through 8, meet from 6 to 7:30 pm. High School, grades 9 though 12, meet from 7 to 8:30 pm. Both groups will share a meal together at 7 pm. Please let us know if your student is going to be part of our student ministries by registering here.

Serve Saturday Hunger Focus

The first Serve Saturday opportunity is coming on September 14! Learn more about our Hunger Ministry as we work on projects in the Resurrection Overland Park food pantry. There will be projects for all ages and ability levels! Check-in begins at 8:45 am, projects begin at 9. Let us know if you can make it by registering here.

Throughout the fall our goal is to develop classes where you can connect with others to study, learn, and build community. We have a few upcoming opportunities to do just that.

Disciple 1 Classes

Beginning Monday September 23, 6:30-8 pm. Disciple 1 provides a foundational overview of the Bible and offers time to develop deep lasting friendships as you study, reflect and pray together as a group. Beginning with Genesis and continuing through Revelation, group members will read approximately 80% of the Bible in this 24-week study. 12 weeks beginning in September, and the other 12 weeks begin in January. Disciple 1 is great for those at any place in their faith journey.

We have two options for this class. Join BJ Huffman (Director of Modern Worship) as he leads a young adult Disciple 1 group. This group is designed specifically to connect young adults in our church. Register for this group here.

Or you can join Barbara Dooley as she leads an all-ages adult Disciple 1 group. Register for Barbara's group here.

The Alpha Course

Mondays, starting September 23, 6:30 to 8:30 pm, this 10-week group will explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting. Alpha is for anyone and people attend from all backgrounds, religions, and viewpoints to investigate questions about the existence of God, the purpose of life, the afterlife, the claims of Jesus and more.

If you’ve ever wondered what the Christian faith is about, whether you are new to church or attended your whole life, this is an excellent starting place. Let us know that you want to participate by registering here.

Financial Peace University

There is still room available to join FPU as we learn to create margin in our lives through financial best practices. This class begins meeting weekly, Monday, September 16, 6:30 to 8 pm. You can register for the class here.

If you have childcare needs on Monday nights, let us know by registering here.

One last thing I want to mention has to do with First Fridays in downtown Kansas City. In light of recent gun violence tragedies, join all our campuses in pushing back fear and celebrating one of the best traditions in Kansas City. Join us at Resurrection Downtown tonight! There will be bounce houses, hot dogs, crafts for the kiddos and ice cream in the Resurrection Downtown (1601 Grand) parking lot during First Fridays in the Kansas City Crossroads. Friday, Sept. 6, 6 - 7:30 pm.

I am grateful for you, Resurrection Overland Park!
