Daily Scripture

Romans 12:9-16 (NRSV)

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are.

Prayer Tip

from Angela LaVallie Tinsley, Facilities Services Program Director

I was talking to my husband about building Christian community, and he said, “It’s not about rituals or practices, it’s about love."

He grew up in a church which he felt judged people on whether or not they agreed with each other and did what they were told. He was so glad to find Christian community where he felt accepted and not judged. Building a loving community requires we lay aside our differences, keep an open mind about one another, and offer understanding and support. Jesus didn’t agree with everyone he encountered, but he loved them and connected them to one another.

Lord God,

In this society that seems especially divided right now, guide us to love one another. We may not agree with – or even like – one another sometimes, but we can respect each other, offering grace with a humble heart.

Give us vision to create a community where people are becoming deeply committed Christians who follow the examples we find in New Testament Scripture and Jesus’ teachings.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
