This past weekend in worship, we celebrated the women in our lives, and Kevin Bogan, our director of Traditional worship, put together a litany that was so beautiful that I just had to share it.

Every one of us has received the gift of life through our mother . . .
…We thank you, God, for our mothers.
For our mothers who have joined God in Heaven and whom we miss dearly here on earth...
…We thank you, God, for the mothers who have gone before.
For every woman who is working day and night, selflessly raising her children right now . .
…We thank you, God, for our mothers of today.
For all the women who are expecting, hoping and praying, but aren't yet mothers . . .
…We thank you, God, for the mothers of tomorrow.
For the foster and adoptive mothers who have welcomed with love the children of others...
…We thank you, God, for mothers with hearts so big.
For the mothers who have lost a child and must carry on . . .
…We thank you, God, and pray for these mothers who need your strength.
For all the women who offered love and council to us . .
…We thank you, God, for our mothers-in-spirit.

We thank you, O Lord, for the women who have influenced, loved and shaped our lives. Help us honor them in everything we do. Amen

As someone who longed for many years to be a mother, and a pastor who has come alongside women in so many of these different categories, I can attest that Mother’s Day is both beautiful and painful. As you pray this prayer, I invite you to consider – if there is a name that comes to mind in one of these categories that you reach out and say, “I’m thinking of you.” Moments of connection like this can mean more than you know to someone who may be hurting today.
