A number of years ago as a part of a small group discussion, participants were invited to talk about our most influential teacher. That discussion was one of the most inspiring and enlivening conversations. I realized that as I shared about my most influential teacher, that I couldn’t stop smiling, and I just had to share that with her. So, I found out where she was currently teaching and sent her a quick email to say thank you, sharing that her enthusiasm and love for students inspired me and continued to change me so many years later. It actually opened the door for us to meet up over lunch a couple of times of the next few years as she traveled to Kansas City to visit family and I have to say that being able to say thank you to her has continued to be one of the most joyful experiences for me.

As we celebrated teachers this weekend in worship, it has made me think back through all of the educators who have given their lives to inspire and challenge and encourage students, and I’d like to invite you to join me in saying, “thank you.” Here’s my challenge - if you can locate them, send a letter or email of gratitude to your most influential teacher and tell them why they made a difference in your life. Or, drop a line here on our Facebook page. I’d love to hear stories of how teachers have changed your lives, and you can read more about mine.

And to all of you who are reading this who have worked in the schools, I want to thank you for the ways that you have poured into their lives. It is no small task, but a profound one.
