When Freddy was little, and trying to gain his independence, he used to say, “I do all my by self.” Sometimes that meant that milk was spilled on the counter, or that half of the toothpaste tube was used in one brushing. Then there were times that I knew he would struggle through it, and if I jumped in too early to help, it would leave him frustrated and only trying harder to do it alone. So, I had to wait patiently, let him know that I was there, and when he was ready, he would say, “Mommy help.”
That’s how I feel about the kind of help that we as a church can offer you. We are your church family, we want to walk alongside you through whatever challenges you may be facing, be it grief, divorce, recovery, caregiving, cancer…. Life is challenging, and there are times when we really can do it “all my by self,” but then there are the moments when we realize that having others around us makes life doable, and all we need to do is ask for help.
On Sunday, I had a conversation with someone who had such a revelation. He told me that he didn’t even know how much better his life could be until he got sober. Three years later, he is a different person in large part because of the support of Pastor Tom and our recovery program here at Resurrection. That is one of hundreds of stories that I hear when people get the help and support that they need. If this is you, a family member, or a friend, I hope that you will consider participating or spread the word – we’ve got groups that meet in person as well as online – www.cor.org/supportgroups. And this Thursday night, you’ll have a chance to hear Pastor Tom’s testimony (pizza and fellowship at 5:30 pm, followed by Tom's testimony), and then a Q&A with Pastor Adam.
I am grateful to be one of your pastors, and we, along with a team of incredible Care Ministers, are here to support you. Fill out a prayer request at cor.org/prayer and let us know how we can help.
Finally, I don’t know about you, but I’m always on the lookout for family friendly, outdoor activities. We’ve got one for you this weekend, that’s not only fun, but for a good cause! The Resurrection Car Show will be in our Leawood parking lot outside of Sanctuary A this Saturday, September 11, 9 am – 1 pm. All proceeds benefit our Hunger Relief and Car Repair ministries. Hope to see you there!
