Daily Scripture

Ruth 1:14b-17a

Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth stayed with her. Naomi said, “Look, your sister-in-law is returning to her people and to her gods. Turn back after your sister-in-law.”  But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to abandon you, to turn back from following after you. Wherever you go, I will go; and wherever you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried.

Prayer Tip

Time after time, we hear about how God is like a father, and although there are references in the Bible to God also being like a mother, they are not as plentiful. Especially in our modern culture, there can be a lot of overlapping roles that mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other caretakers play.

This year on Mother’s Day, take time out to offer a prayer of thanksgiving for your mother. If you didn’t grow up with a mother, give thanks for other adults who cared for you and helped shape your life.

Lord God,

We are grateful for the ways you have loved us through our mothers, the ways we have been able to see you in them. We pray for the mothers in our lives; help us to show them our love and appreciation for them so that they may also see you in us. We pray for those mothers who have lost children or those who long to be mothers, and we pray for those who are experiencing Mother’s Day without their mothers; give them the peace that only you can provide. Help us to remember how you love us in a motherly way so that we might love others accordingly.
