Prayer Tip: Parables from the Underside

Daily Scripture

Luke 18:9-14

Jesus told this parable to certain people who had convinced themselves that they were righteous and who looked on everyone else with disgust: “Two people went up to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed about himself with these words, ‘God, I thank you that I’m not like everyone else—crooks, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week. I give a tenth of everything I receive.’ But the tax collector stood at a distance. He wouldn’t even lift his eyes to look toward heaven. Rather, he struck his chest and said, ‘God, show mercy to me, a sinner.’ I tell you, this person went down to his home justified rather than the Pharisee. All who lift themselves up will be brought low, and those who make themselves low will be lifted up.”

This week’s GPS focuses on Christ’s intentionality to walk towards the cross. Christ knew what he was entering into, yet he did so with intention.

What is your intention with your walk with God? Each day, I take intentional steps towards God. When I open my eyes, I thank God for waking me up for another day. When I put my feet on the ground, I thank God for being healthy. To make this an intentional walk with God, I have reminders on my phone to stop and pause and give God all the glory. I may use sticky notes, meditative apps on my phone, or turn on music that swallows me into true focus on the Lord.

I encourage you to try making intentional steps toward God. If you get distracted, that is okay; bring your awareness back to your intentions for each day and keep going. We are putting on spiritual armor to keep negative and intrusive thoughts at bay when we do this. We are also drawing closer to our marvelous Redeemer.

Creator God, as we make intentional steps towards you, receive us as people who need a Savior. Comfort us, protect us, and remind us to stay on the path of redemption. Remind us that you continue to call us into an intentional relationship with you for a lifetime and beyond. Be gentle with us when we become distracted and nudge us to jump back into an intentional walk with you. Amen.

Lenten Guide for Children and Families

Click Here to download this weeks Lenten Guide.

The Lenten Guide is a tool to encourage families to spend time together in prayer, conversations, and discovery. Make time on Sunday afternoons or an evening at the dinner table each week as we approach the hope of Easter. Consider using the following tips/guidelines as you share this time:

  • Commit to being in worship together as a family during Lent.
  • Read the Scripture aloud (and invite your child to read if they are old enough to do so)
  • Take turns leading the prayer time
  • Be curious and listen for God through one another!
