1 John 3:18

Let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

Prayer Tip

Love is a powerful thing. And if we’re not careful, we can treat it rather carelessly. Our culture often talks about what it means to love. We love a good book. We love good food. We love our phones. We love our Chiefs. Yes, we love our family and friends... but what does it mean to truly love?

Our faith teaches us that Jesus showed us this when “He laid down His life for us.” But John continued, “We also ought to lay down our lives for our sisters and brothers” (1 John 3:16).

The Greek word used for love in these verses is not new to us. Agape is the primary concern for John. This kind of love is characterized by sacrifice. It is a love based on the will. It’s not a feeling – it is not subject to the whims of convenience. Rather, it is a decision to love another no matter the cost. Laying down our lives is more than just stopping to help a person, but actually entering their world in their times of deep need.

I recently experienced this with my one of my neighbors. A couple weeks ago I was headed out the door on my way to the church, only to recognize that I had a flat tire. Frustrated, I began to change the tire, but grew more frustrated because I didn’t have the proper tools to change it. Lesson learned. As I sat dejected on my drive way, my neighbor across the street, who I hadn’t met, saw me in need. He looked busy, but that didn’t matter to him in that moment. He graciously offered to help.

Now, every time we see each other, we go out of our way to greet one another. Changing a tire is a small thing, but that is not the point. With agape love, even small acts of love can have big impacts!

Don’t miss small opportunities to love this week.

Gracious God,

We love you. Thank you for loving us first.

Continue to mold and shape us into the community you have called us to be.

Empower us to be your hands and feet, but more, allow us to not only experience your love daily, help us to share it with all those we meet.

Amen.
