From Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy.
To the Thessalonians’ church that is in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Grace and peace to all of you.
We always thank God for all of you when we mention you constantly in our prayers. This is because we remember your work that comes from faith, your effort that comes from love, and your perseverance that comes from hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of our God and Father. Brothers and sisters, you are loved by God, and we know that he has chosen you. We know this because our good news didn’t come to you just in speech but also with power and the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know as well as we do what kind of people we were when we were with you, which was for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord when you accepted the message that came from the Holy Spirit with joy in spite of great suffering. As a result you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.
from Tino Herrera, Congregational Care Pastor
Today, I am reminded of my beautiful Abuelita (Grandmother). She was not only a rock for our family but also for her community. She would go out of her way to welcome anyone to her home, offering a warm meal, or an encouraging word. Many from the neighborhood would claim her as their own grandmother.
Her service is an example of the words of Paul who wrote to the Thessalonians that he thanked God for “your work produced by faith, your effort that comes from love, and your perseverance that comes from the hope our Lord Jesus Christ.”
She served in faith and love. Her faith drove her to see a better community and a better world. And through her love, she modeled the compassion of Jesus by offering a listening ear, an encouraging word, or just a plate of warm tamales.
She also had hope. There are many things we see today that can get us discouraged, but she would always remind me that “the good always outweighs the bad, and good is prevailing.” I still carry those words with me today.
Whether it’s offering a listening ear, a hug, or a gentle smile, be encouraged in the work God has called us to do. Your life can be a powerful testimony of faith, hope, and love.
Today we remember those who have impacted and inspired us in our walk with you. Empower us to have my eyes open to see other’s needs, direction from you on ways we can serve, and strength to live out our lives with faith, love, and hope.
