Daily Scripture

Romans 12:1-2 (NRSV)

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Prayer Tip

Hebrews 10:23-25 says, "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as in the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."

I love the imagery that stirring up love and good works create. Stirring means action. We don’t just sit back and create love and good works, it requires effort. According to Bon Appétit, to make the best risotto, you must make sure you stir enough:

“Stirring the rice constantly will add air into the risotto, cooling it down and making it gluey. But if you don’t stir enough, the rice will stick to the bottom and burn. Agitating the rice is important, because risotto’s creaminess comes from the starch generated when grains of rice rub against each other.”

Just like the rice in risotto, we are better when we are together. Working alongside each other, encouraging each other, helping to accomplish great things. If I were the only one donating to our food drive, it would be a sad food drive. But when we all come together we are able to collect literally tons of food for people in need.

Take some time this week to pray and meditate on this verse and ask God for guidance on ways you can stir up love and good works. Ask God for opportunities for you to be an encouragement to someone. Request that you would find ways to promote peace and harmony around you.

Dear Jesus,

You created us to accept your love and grace, so we can share it with others. Give us the strength and diligence to stir up love and good works so we can pour blessings on your people.
