Since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving… You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion.
As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.
As Christians, we know cannot earn our salvation. Jesus paid that price for us once and for all. When we strive to live our lives in a way that honors God, we do so out of love and gratitude for what has already been given to us. We worship, study, and share our faith because our hearts are changed.
In the same way, we aren’t called to give to others as a condition of receiving Christ but as an outward sign of a changed heart. If you struggle with sharing what you have (financially and time, talents, and belongings) with others, pray for God to help you to be more generous and consider how you might give even a little to someone in need.
Lord God, we are grateful for all the good things you have given us. Help us to see those blessings in our lives and guide us as we long to bless others. Sometimes we give to others without giving it a second thought, but other times it doesn’t even occur to us that we have something to give. Give us opportunities to be generous and open our eyes and hearts to see those opportunities. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
