Thanksgiving Prayer Vigil

Share This

The Thanksgiving Prayer Vigil is one of our annual traditions, where we have cared for each other through prayer as a congregation. We spend the day praying over the name of each Resurrection member and for those in our communities, all the while cultivating gratitude for what we each have.

This is a church-wide come and go prayer event in the Wesley Chapel at the Leawood location on Tuesday, November 23 of Thanksgiving week from 7 am - 7 pm.

To participate online, use the video and prayers below.

“Thanksgiving is inseparable from true prayer; it is almost essentially connected with it. One who always prays is ever giving praise, whether in ease or pain, both for prosperity and for the greatest adversity. He blesses God for all things, looks on them as coming from Him, and receives them for His sake — not choosing nor refusing, liking or disliking anything, but only as it is agreeable or disagreeable to His perfect will.”

A Thanksgiving Prayer

Oh, God, when I have food
help me to remember the hungry;
When I have work, help me
to remember the jobless;
When I have a warm home,
help me to remember those without homes;
When I am without pain,
help me to remember those who suffer;
and in remembering, help me
to cultivate gratitude
and be led to compassion.
Make me concerned enough
to help, through word and action,
those who cry out
for what we take for granted.

God's Presence

Deuteronomy 31:6

“Be strong and bold; have no fear or dread of them, because it is the LORD your God who goes with you; he will not fail you or forsake you.”

A Psalm of Thanksgiving

Psalm 100

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
Worship the Lord with gladness;
come into his presence with singing.
Know that the Lord is God.
It is he that made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise.
Give thanks to him, bless his name.
For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.

Words of Comfort from Jesus

John 14:1, 26-27

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.

A Prayer for Hope

Loving God, show us the greatness of your goodness. Help us to overflow with thanks every day. Bless us abundantly with rest for our hearts and minds, wisdom for our lives, and patience in suffering. Give us joyful hope that radiates your love to others.

Philippians 4:6-8

Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

A Prayer of Gratitude and Thanksgiving

Dear God, in this moment of prayer, I come to be fully present in your grace. In good times as well as difficult times, I give thanks for your sustaining presence that is always available to me. Even in moments of darkness, I acknowledge the preciousness of this sacred life, and I open my heart, mind and body to allow the Holy Spirit to fill me. I give gratitude for your loving kindness, and I ask for the awareness to see the multitude of ways in which your beauty expresses around me in this world.

Reflecting on my fellow brothers and sisters, I offer my love without condition as Jesus teaches me to do. I set the intention to do all of the good I can in this world for all of God’s children, to give my compassion freely and to allow myself to be a vessel of your light. Every morning, without exception, you offer your love to me again, and with humility I give thanks, in your name, for all that is. Amen.

Praise You In This Storm

by Casting Crowns

I was sure by now,
God you would have reached down
And wiped our tears away,
Stepped in and saved the day.
But once again, I say amen, that it’s still raining

As the thunder rolls
I barely hear your whisper through the rain
I’m with you

And I’ll praise you in this storm
And I will lift my hands
That you are who you are
No matter where I am
And every tear I’ve cried
You hold in your hand
You never left my side
And though my heart is torn
I will praise you in this storm

I lift my eyes unto the hills
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord
The maker of heaven and earth
I lift my eyes unto the hills
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord
The maker of heaven and earth
