Greetings RezDowntowners,

This the beginning of Memorial Day Weekend, the unofficial start to another Kansas City summer, albeit a markedly different one. I hope each of you are doing well. It has been hard to be away from you during this season of sheltering in place, but I press on in the hope of returning together sooner than later.

Despite our distance, please know that we are here for you and want to connect. Each week we are hosting several online gatherings and virtual coffees, but more than that, we wan you to know that we are doing everything we can to offer pastoral care, counseling and assistance for anybody who has need.

One of the things I would love to draw your attention to specifically, are several COVID-19 related care conversations and resources. If you're on Facebook, you may have seen Pastor Anne's interviews with mental health professionals and other specialists on topics like suicide prevention, loneliness, care-giving, recovery and self-compassion as they relate to the COVID-19 pandemic. We want those interviews to be easily accessible for all, including those who don't have a Facebook, so you can find a link to those and other resources at cor.org/downtown/getcare. Please know that even though the church's doors are closed, our community is still alive and active and our pastors and staff are here for you.

This weekend in worship, Pastor Adam will be preaching a special Memorial Day focused message on remembering and the power of God's memory and Jesus' command to remember God always. I hope you'll join us by visiting cor.org/live or on Channel 41 (KSHB) at 1 am. Invite friends and family to gather with you and make it a Memorial Day celebration.

We want to make space for you to Honor Your Loved One on Memorial Day Weekend. Please consider dropping by our sanctuary at 1601 Grand for a safe, socially-distanced, fully-masked, sacred moment to honor your loved one. We invite you to bring a photo, share a story, light a candle and have a short prayer. To limit the amount of people present at one time, we invite you to sign up for a ten-minute time slot here. Only people who have registered will be able to enter the building.

Join us TOMORROW in a pop-up donation drive for A Turning Point! We'll be at 1522 McGee from 9-11 am collecting your donated food and household supplies. Stay in your car and pop your trunk for staff members and volunteers to unload your donations in a safe and distanced manner.

Requested items:

  • Canned veggies and fruit (no corn)
  • Canned and dry beans
  • Meal helpers and boxed meals (Hamburger Helper, Mac & Cheese, etc.)
  • Canned meat
  • Cereal
  • Ramen
  • Household goods: toilet paper, hygiene items, feminine products, cleaning supplies

First Friday Cookie Giveaway Will Still Happen!

Have you been looking for ways you and your family can bless and encourage your neighbors during this time of COVID-19? Sign up for a bag of Sonflower Bakery cookies to share, and stop by our 1522 McGee location on Friday, June 5, from 5–7 pm to pick them up! Each bag will include Vacation Bible Camp (which is "on-the-go" this year!) invitational flyers to share as well.

Quantities are limited (10 cookies per bag, and you can pick up one or two bags) and they’ll go fast! Reach out to Kelly.Sisney@cor.org with questions.

Registration for Vacation Bible Camp 2020 is Now Open

Because of COVID-19, we have had to change our plans for in-person Vacation Bible Camp this year, but VBC is happening July 20-24 with a “VBC On-the-Go” experience. We’ll provide a kit full of awesome activities, a t-shirt, links to online videos and other resources.

Please know that your faithfulness is making a huge difference in our church as well as in our city. I hope you have a great Friday and I'll look forward to seeing you in worship this weekend at cor.org/live or on KSHB! Happy Memorial Day and know that I love you...and there's nothing you can do about it!

With Grace, Peace and God's Holy Adventure,
