Good morning and happy Friday to you. I hope you are doing well. Things have been crazy here at the church for the last couple of days. We've had classes ("She Reads Truth" and a couple others) get off to a great start, but it has also been a week defined by basketball.
This is Big 12 Tournament week, which means that the streets have been full, as have our parking lots. This is always a good time of year to celebrate the vibrant community here in downtown KC, but it's also a great time to remind you that for large events like the Big 12 Tourney and other Sprint Center events, we typically sell our parking spaces as a way of advancing our missional efforts throughout the city. This has a become a great way for us to continue building Christian community throughout the city, so if you are planning to come down for any of this weekend's sporting events, know that by paying for parking at the church, you are also contributing to the mission and ministry of Resurrection Downtown.
Another way you can join us in making a difference throughout Kansas City is by joining us on Saturday, March 17 for our St. Patrick's edition of Serve Saturday. Join us for a special morning of service #withKC and continue to chisel away at our collective goal of serving 18 hours in 2018. This month, we'll build community by hosting family-friendly St. Patrick’s Day parties for three different organizations. Or, if working with your hands is more your style, come dressed to get dirty at one of our other sites painting, cleaning, or building. Email PastorPatrick@cor.org with questions! Also, be sure to invite friends and family to join you for this front door service experience, we'll have a special gift for everyone in attendance.
I also want to encourage you to consider joining us as a volunteer or participant at this year's City Wide Easter Egg Hunt. If you can believe it, Easter is right around the corner and I am already getting egg-cited for this awesome egg-stravaganza taking place on the lawn of the Liberty Memorial on Saturday, March 24 from 10 am to noon.
We’ll have baskets of fun with petting zoo animals, cookie decorating, bounce houses, crafts and other family activities including an egg hunt and a special visit from the Easter Bunny! We are hunting for volunteers to help with these fun activities; contact Sarah.Brischle@cor.org if you want to help. We need to hop to it to get it all ready in time! I hope you'll join us and spread the word far and wide to make this year's event the best yet.
Finally, this weekend in worship, I'll be preaching as we continue in our Lenten series on Jesus in the Gospel of Mark. This week I'll take a look at the role the disciples play in the gospels and how they are portrayed in the Gospel of Mark, perhaps more so than any other gospel, as bumbling, confused and misunderstanding followers of Jesus. Despite their inability to live fearlessly and faithfully, Jesus still shows them mercy, and my hope is that we might experience the same grace and undeserved love as we examine where we fit into the story.
I am excited to see you this weekend and I look forward to preaching on a Big 12 Basketball weekend – we'll call it March Madness!
