Help Us Sack Hunger

This weekend Pastor Adam continued our sermon series on Paul’s letter to the church in Rome. He spoke about Paul’s admonition to not be “conformed to the patterns of this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of your minds" (Romans 12:2). We’re to be transformed Christians, Pastor Adam said, who don’t let evil have the final word but instead, we love. This type of love he described by the Greek word agape, meaning “selfless kindness.” It is the defining mark of a transformed life and the goal of Christian discipleship. Then he shared a little picture of what that looks like with our Hunger ministry.

It was exciting to see the mobile food pantry all ready to roll. This has been a dream and a yearlong process to completion during the pandemic. I’ve heard we already have over one hundred volunteers trained to help with the pantry. And now we all have the opportunity to fill it, as well as resource a number of food pantries in the Kansas City area, as we begin our Sack Hunger Food drive. We have grocery sacks available for you to fill with a suggested food item list, which you can pick up during worship or office hours or you can give financial support for a bulk food purchase. If you go to, you’ll find the list of suggested food items and the link to give online. There is also more information about our Hunger Ministry. Donations can be dropped off during Serve Saturday, September 18, from 9-11 am at any of our locations, or by September 26 before or after worship.

I also remind you that another way we practice loving kindness at Resurrection is through our Partner School Ministry. Knowing that education is a vital part of breaking the cycle of poverty, we work to support students and staff in some of the most vulnerable places in Kansas City. Tomorrow, on September 15, we’ll host an informational meeting at our Downtown location at 1522 McGee from 10 – 11:30 am. Meet one of our Wendell Phillips partner school liaisons and learn about opportunities to get involved. Register here for that meeting!
