Welcoming Baby Adalynn Grace Into the World

Good morning, Resurrection Overland Park!

One week ago, early on Friday morning, Claire and I rushed to the hospital to welcome our baby into the world. Adalynn Grace arrived nine and a half weeks early which means she will stay in the NICU until her original due date, which was in April. She surprised us – a very small and mighty surprise!

It’s difficult to describe the fear and uncertainty we felt at her birth. Even in our fear, Claire and I encountered God’s grace through doctors, nurses, specialists, and hospital staff who loved us and Adalynn.

This morning, I am writing to you from the couch of the NICU room where our sweet baby girl is snuggling with her mom. My heart is crumbling to pieces with love, understanding more intimately that “[God’s] love is woven through all creation threading heart to heart.” This is the most amazing kind of grace.

Similarly, on Wednesday night, Claire and I departed the hospital to participate in the Ash Wednesday Experience. I know many of you also participated. It was late and cold... so cold. As soon as we arrived, seeing our staff team, we shed tears of gratitude for the way they have loved us, walked alongside us, and prayed with us.

Claire and I cannot adequately express our gratitude to you, our church family, for your care and love. We have felt your prayers. We have felt Christ's abiding presence through you.

Thank you.

For now, we’ll continue to help Adalynn grow with doctors and nurses by our side. We cannot wait to take her home. We cannot wait for her to meet so many people who pray for her and already love her. I thought you might enjoy seeing a picture.

Join us in the Lenten Journey

We began Lent this week with Ash Wednesday. Together, we prepare our hearts and minds through the next 40 days, not including Sundays, through reflection, repentance, and Easter hope.

If you haven't already, watch the Ash Wednesday Evensong service here. It is beautiful, meaningful, and inspiring.

As we enter this season of self-reflection, repentance, and recommitting ourselves to actively following Christ, Pastor Adam has two Lenten challenges for us:

  1. To be in worship each weekend of Lent, the six weekends leading up to Easter, and
  2. To read the Gospel of Mark during Lent. He'll be preaching through Mark, the earliest and most concise of our four Gospels.

This Weekend in Worship

Pastor Adam will kick off our Lenten series with a message entitled "Just the Beginning..." as a part of our new sermon series, Walk With Jesus Through the Gospel of Mark. Join us Saturday (5 pm) or Sunday (7:30 am, 9:15 am, 11 am, or 5 pm) at cor.org/live or on Channel 38 "The Spot" at 8 am or 11 am.

Our hope is that every member of our congregation will read through Mark together. To make that easier, we have created a Lenten journal that walks you through each day with scripture and reflection and follows along with the sermon series. Journals are available for pick up in the church office and can also be found online here.

Church-Wide Lenten Study

Join Resurrection pastors online on Wednesday nights for a study of Mark’s gospel. Each week one of our pastors will offer a 30-minute teaching, followed by about 30 minutes of live, interactive conversation via Zoom. I’ll be leading Week 2 of this study. You can visit cor.org/next for more info and to request the Zoom link.

You can also join in a 5-week Lenten Study led by me and our Pastoral Resident Karissa Miller on Thursday evenings beginning February 25 via Zoom. This is a good option especially if you are not yet connected to a small group. To prepare for class each week, participants should do at least two of the following: watch the week's sermon, watch the video of the week's lesson, and/or read the daily Scripture readings listed in the journal. We will meet online on Thursdays, 7- 8:15 pm. Register here.

Serve Saturday is this Weekend

Last, this weekend is Serve Saturday and there are still volunteer slots available all over the KC metro area. Don't forget to double the blessing by inviting friends to sign up with you. View the sign up here.

Our church-wide donation drive for February is also on Saturday, and this month we are collecting clothing and computers. Please see details here and you can drop off between 9-12 at any of our locations.

My family is blessed by you and our church. Thank you for the many ways you care for and love others with the strength and hope of Christ.

With so much gratitude and love,

Joshua
