Dear Resurrection Overland Park,

I hope you are enjoying the fourth of July week. I read a news report that estimates about 48.9 million people are traveling at least 50 miles to celebrate with family, friends, or on vacation. If you are traveling, Godspeed! If you are staying closer to home, I hope to see you this weekend.

This Weekend

This weekend we begin a new sermon series called Resurrection Life: Becoming the Good News. Pastor Scott Chrostek, our downtown Campus Pastor, will be preaching live from Resurrection Leawood about how we embody the hope of the gospel and by living with the love and life of Christ. I encourage you to attend this weekend worship at one of our campuses in person or, if you are out of town, online. Let’s start the series with Scott, and I will preach the second week of our series at our second preview service. More about that in just a moment.

Then, join me Sunday evening, 5 pm, at Resurrection Overland Park for our Weekly Gathering. We have two guests joining us: Kelly Sisney, the Director of Operations and Community Life for Resurrection Downtown, and Yvonne Gentile, Senior Director of Hospitality and Connections for the entire church. Did you know Kelly is a former comedian? Kelly and Yvonne will lead us in a conversation as we prepare for our second preview service.

Second Preview Service

July 14, 9:30 am

I am looking forward to our second preview service! This is our second opportunity to practice, prepare, and test the traditional worship service. The previews are helpful as we get set to launch in August with two worship services: a modern and traditional service. Who would you like to invite? Think about the friends, family, coworkers, or others you want to invite to be part of this awesome morning. Most of the time people just need an invitation.

I will be preaching the second week of our sermon series Resurrection Life. Suzy is preparing our volunteer teams, Lauren and others have been hard at work preparing the KiDSCOR space, we will welcome back BJ Huffman, our new Director of Modern Worship (he starts officially August 1), and Adam is getting set with the technical needs. It really is a team effort and we need you, too!

Resurrection OP Summer Family Cookout

Sunday July 28, 5 pm to 7 pm

You, family, and friends are invited! This will be a fun evening to build community and engage our neighborhood with lawn games, a fun bouncy slide for kids, a Kona Ice truck, as well as burgers and hotdogs on the grill. Bring a side dish to share and a lawn chair to sit. Please let us know if you are able to attend by registering here.

Coffee with the Pastor

If you are thinking about membership, our third Coffee with the Pastor event of the summer will be August 4, 1:30 to 3:30 pm at Resurrection OP. We would love to know if you are able to make it – please register here.

Vacation Bible Camp will be here soon!

Vacation Bible Camp is less than a month away, July 29 through August 2! There is still time to register. Do you know a kid who would love to be part of this week? Is God inviting you to volunteer?

One last thing. The word is getting out in the neighborhood that something new is coming near the corner of 95th and Antioch. If you are asked by a neighbor or friend, I’d love for you to share what is happening. Here is an example of what you might share:

Resurrection Overland Park is located on the site of the former Valley View United Methodist Church. After 60 years of serving in the Overland Park community, the Valley View congregation took a bold step forward to close and become Resurrection Overland Park to ensure they continue to share Christ with new generations and serve the community. The Church of the Resurrection is one church in multiple locations. With locations in Leawood, Olathe, Downtown, and Blue Springs, thousands of people – many of your friends, neighbors and co-workers – have found a home at Resurrection.

This week I visited a couple in the hospital after a significant surgery. The surgery went well, and we talked together about life, faith, and the Resurrection Overland Park community. I also prayed with them and could not help thinking how fortunate I am to serve as your pastor. We are on this holy journey together.

See you Sunday,

Joshua Clough
