Hello Resurrection Overland Park,
Happy Friday! It's a beautiful day today. It's even better because I get to watch my little one grow a bit each day. Adalynn is doing well, Claire and I are loving life with her as a family. Though I must say, I didn't always believe new parents when they said, "get ready for the lack of sleep!" I believe you now. But less sleep is so worth it. I can't wait for you to get to meet her someday soon.
We are beginning a new sermon series! Scripture calls us to be light in the darkness; to let our light shine. In the first words written in our New Testament, Paul called a small group of new Christians to be "children of the light." In that letter, he offered wisdom for how to live as Christians in a non-Christian world. Two thousand years later, the first letter to the Thessalonians still offers powerful guidance for us today.
This weekend Pastor Adam will share a message entitled, "Faithfulness Despite Opposition." You can join us in person at 9 am and 11 am. You can also join us online Saturday at 5 pm or Sunday 7:30 am, 9 am, 11 am, or 5 pm, on YouTube, or the television broadcast Channel 38 "The Spot" at 8 and 11 am.
Also in worship this weekend, along with each of our locations, we'll commemorate the last year and a half at Resurrection Overland Park with a time capsule. Together, we'll fill and seal a brand new time capsule - to be opened in 25 years! In each worship service, we'll take a photo of our group to capture this moment in time. You'll want to be part of this historic moment as we imagine what God can do with our church and ministry over the next 25 years.
Sunday, May 2, 10:15 am
Are you new to Resurrection Overland Park? If you attended Coffee With the Pastors last Sunday or any time over the past year, even if you are interested in learning more about the Overland Park campus, join me this Sunday between services at 10:15 am. I'd love the chance to connect with you in person, talk with you, introduce some of our staff, and offer next step opportunities. Oh, and you'll have the chance to meet other new members.
Registration isn't necessary, but if you'd like to let us know you are coming click here.
May 15, 9 am – noon or 1–4 pm
One of the essentials to living out our Christian faith is serving. I'd like to encourage you to join us for Serve Saturday.
Each month, we have opportunities for 500 people to make a difference by serving in our community and throughout KC. You can do this too! There are many options, but we'd especially like to invite you to serve alongside some of our Overland Park staff at Metro Center United Inner City Services and at Synergy Services - both locations are family-friendly. Registration is required to ensure covid protocol is followed.
If those spots fill up, there are plenty of great opportunities, including outdoor options, food pantries, assisting with donation sorting, yard beautification, community garden opportunities, and more.
Roll up your sleeve and help save a life! Church of the Resurrection's Blood Drive is one of the leading sources of blood in the Kansas City area. Anyone who is healthy, at least 16 years old, and weighs at least 110 pounds may donate. Register here!
VBC will be IN-PERSON this summer at all of our locations! We will kick off the week on Sunday, July 18. Every household will go home with a link to a special video from Pastor Adam introducing the 'Great Adventure' theme for the week. Kids will be learning how the Israelites trusted God in the Exodus story and how they can trust God too! The week will culminate with a family-friendly party on Friday, July 23. You will not want to miss it! Registration is open at cor.org/VBC. There will also be a virtual option for those out of the KC area or not yet comfortable with in-person gatherings.
Also, we are ready for you to volunteer and help introduce God's love to kids at VBC! Sign-up to serve now, and if you have kids PreK and under, we will provide childcare while you serve!
Seeing you in worship each weekend has been a great reminder of what a blessing it is to be in community with one another! If you are in the Kansas City area and worshipping in person, would you be willing to volunteer with us one Sunday a month? From serving in KiDSCOR to greeting, ushering, or even serving coffee, there's a place for you! If you are interested in serving, please let us know here!
How can something this fun have so much to teach us about the Christian walk? "The Gospel According to Hamilton (The Musical)" is a four-week class exploring themes found in both the content and creation of the musical, paralleled with themes in Scripture. We'll discuss a Christian approach to ambition, how we view history, and what the diversity in this production has to teach us. Don't throw away your shot to take this class! Register here. Classes begin May 5.
This past Sunday we hosted our virtual Coffee with the Pastors and we welcomed 6 new members to Resurrection Overland Park! Many others joined across all campuses. I'd love for you to pray for them by name with me and officially welcome them to our community. You will see their names here: Gary Bernhardt, Mary Frances Knowles, Candy Koleber, Jake and Caroline Marshall, and Shelly Minton.
I am consistently amazed how God continues to use you, your gifts, passion, and faith to make a difference in other peoples lives. I want to encourage you to continue to serve in ministry and share the light of Christ in our neighborhood.
