Running a Marathon, Launching a Church

Hi Resurrection Overland Park,

Ready or not, I’ll be joining several thousand people running the Kansas City Marathon tomorrow. I am excited for the race! Claire was a bit smarter than me and opted for the 10k. It occurred to me that I have trained the past 24 weeks for this marathon – I began about the same time a group of 200 people gathered in the gym for the very first time to prepare for the launch of Resurrection Overland Park. It is amazing to see how God has led us these past months and to think about how God will lead us in the future.

Why do people run marathons? That is a great question. I’m glad you asked!

There are many reasons. It is fun (I know some you are thinking, “yeah right!?”). It is a challenge that pushes the mind and body to its limits. You make great friends. For me, when I run, I connect with God and my faith is strengthened. (Have I convinced you to become a runner yet?) I'm guessing you have some kind of activity you love that has a similar effect in your life. On Sunday, I’ll let you know how the marathon goes!

Sunday, we continue our sermon series, Words of Life, focusing on the 9th commandment, “Do not give false witness.” Pastor Adam will preach a message about honesty and the significance of our witness or the words we speak to and about others. As part of the sermon, we’ll hear an interview with one of our pastors, Darryl Burton, who was wrongfully imprisoned due to a false testimony and spent years in prison. Now that he's been exonerated, he helps others who have been wrongly imprisoned. You won’t want to miss this powerful weekend in worship. Consider inviting a friend to worship. See you at 9:30 or 11 am.

Here are a few other things coming up…

Getting Started Gathering, October 20, 12:30 pm

If you are looking for a way to get involved, connected, or simply want to know a bit more about our church, join me and our staff team for a 30-45 minute gathering right after Sunday worship. You don't even need to sign up! Contact Suzy.Ayres@cor.org with questions.

Trunk or Treat, October 26, 4-6 pm

Join us for a family-friendly, fun Trunk or Treat event Saturday, October 26, 4-6 pm. We are planning for a Food Truck, DIY Caramel apples, pumpkins to paint, and games to play! Kids are encouraged to wear costumes and trick or treat in the RezOP parking lot.

In addition to bringing the children in your life to enjoy the fun, we also need people to volunteer and help us run the event. Can you decorate the trunk of your car as a candy station? If so, please contact Lauren.Cook@cor.org or let her know here. If you can't do that, can you do something as simple as donating candy? You can drop it off at church this weekend.

Food Pantry Volunteer Training, October 27

Want to serve in our Food Pantry? Preparations and renovations are in progress for the Grand Re-opening of our Food Pantry. Now is a great time to get involved. Come to an info session and training for all current and new volunteers on Sunday October 27 at 12:30 pm. Contact Suzy.Ayres@cor.org if you’d like to jump in and serve in the food pantry.

Blood Drive is Coming to Resurrection Overland Park, Nov. 4, 2-7 pm!

Church of the Resurrection is celebrating 25 years of partnership with the Community Blood Center. Resurrection Overland Park’s first blood drive is scheduled for Nov 4 from 2-7 pm. Click on this link to make an appointment to donate blood. There will be pie!

Want to help serve at the Blood Drive? Contact Suzy.Ayres@cor.org.

Middle School and High School Retreat

We are excited that so many students have registered for our annual fall retreat, Metamorphosis! This annual spiritual retreat is designed to allow students to grow deeper in their faith and also encounter God in new ways.

We call it Metamorphosis because we count on the fact that God will change us, transform us, and mold us into something new. The weekend will include outdoor games, tons of good grub (S'MORES!), amazing student-led worship music, great messages, and time to grow in Christian community. Registration is still open online and will remain open through October 29:

Third Grade Bible Presentation coming up November 10

Do you have a family member or friend in the Third Grade? We are honoring the Methodist tradition of presenting our third graders with their very own Bible in front of the congregation on Sunday, November 10, at all services. This special tradition invites children into their own reading of Scripture with a personal Bible. This year, we are also including any fourth or fifth graders who have not yet received a Bible from any Resurrection campus. Register your child here – you will choose your service time in the registration. We can’t wait to present Bibles along with information and other tools to help your child explore their new Bible!

One last thing. Tomorrow afternoon we are celebrating our first wedding at Resurrection Overland Park. I am excited for this couple as they embark upon this covenant of marriage. It is going to be a great weekend all around!

See you Sunday,

Joshua
