Hello Resurrection Overland Park,
Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you’ve had a wonderful week with family, friends, or the people with whom you chose to spend the day. Claire and I spent the day with wonderful friends whom we love dearly. This week I gave thanks to God for you, Resurrection Overland Park. You (or one of your family members) may have gotten a call this week from me, one of our staff members, or a volunteer saying, “Thank you!” We called 680 households simply because we wanted to let you know how much we appreciate you attending worship and other events at our campus.
This weekend begins our very first Advent season together! It is also Family Worship weekend which means your children are invited to join us in worship. We will provide nursery care up to age 3. The advent season is a special (and my favorite) time of the year.
Advent is the four-week journey that leads us to Christmas. The word Advent comes from the Latin Adventus, meaning “to come” or “to arrive.” Together, we anticipate the arrival of Jesus, born as an infant into the world. Pastor Adam will begin a new sermon series The King is Born as we look at the prophetic promises of scripture and how they relate to the Christmas story. We'll conclude our time in worship by sharing in communion. Bring a friend this weekend!
In between worship services we will also have fun, family-friendly activities. This week we will have cookies and cocoa available in the Fellowship Hall coffee area.
I have been amazed by your generosity throughout the fall season. We’ve already collected 76 toys that will go to the Crosslines Christmas Store helping parents in need provide gifts to their kids. Our goal is to collect 200 toys or games. There is still time to donate - we've extended our deadline to December 4. We’ve also given away 118 holiday meal bags to our food pantry guests in addition to their regular groceries. Last week, we dedicated the Food Pantry. We celebrated the renovation of the space with our community partners such as Harvesters and the city of Overland Park represented by the Mayor.
Next week, we will begin an Advent Study called Almost Christmas based on the book by the same title. You may want to purchase the book, but it is not required to attend the class. Here is the Amazon link. I'll be leading the class on Monday evenings at 6:30 (register here) and Jenny Nehrbass will be offering the study on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 (register here).
If you haven't completed your commitment card, you can still do that online at cor.org/overlandpark/commitment.
I am off to enjoy the last couple days of my vacation time this week. I pray for you often! I am grateful I have the opportunity to serve as your pastor. I’ll see you Sunday!
