January 2017 Mission Update

What a month it has been serving at RezDT! Our townies have done so much to help our community feel loved. I hope that our commitments through the holiday season will translate into a commitment to serving this and nearly every Saturday at FaithWork. There are few other ways to live into a life of hope and joy than to go out and serve others. Every time we meet, we hear stories from people who intended to give time and resources and walk away feeling like they got more than they gave. This is the paradox of service in the Body of Christ. And when we value that which we receive in return, it is so clear that our ministries are with people rather than for them. As the joy of all the gifts you may have received over the holidays fades, remember that there is no greater gift that you can give than an invitation to join us in service with our community. The true gifts of hope and joy just can't be purchased with money, they can only be freely given and received. Our goal is to have 100 new people introduced to FaithWork in 2017. With how many people will you share this gift in 2017 to help us reach this goal?

Faithwork this Saturday

Saturday, Jan. 21, 9 am

Bring in the new year by sharing the joy with someone new through serving at January FaithWork! We will be working with Rose Brooks Center, Healing House and My Father's House this month. Not to bribe you to come... but we will be issuing our new RezDT beanies!

FaithWork is a monthly service event that provides pre-planned opportunities with our partner organizations in Kansas City. Participants meet at Resurrection Downtown at 9 a.m. for a short introduction and then are sent out to serve. All ages, skill sets, faiths and non-faiths are welcome to participate.

Immediate Needs

Community FaithWork Partner Need

Community LINC is in need of two twin beds and frames. If you or someone you know is able to fulfill this need, please contact Daniel Barber at A Community LINC representative can pick up beds.

Volunteer Tax Preparers working with MU Extension, Americorps and the local community is helping elderly and lower income residents in our neighborhood file their tax returns. This free service saves them money and could put a little money back in their pockets depending upon their return. There are many opportunities from hospitality, sitting with neighbors doing the paperwork, and auditing the paperwork to satisfy a multitude of volunteer skills and desires. There is training required to work directly with tax documents. Please find more information on the website, apply there and selecting the Full Employment Council volunteer location, and email to let me know about it.

International Service Opportunities

Serve in Honduras

Teams will serve with volunteers from the Methodist Church in El Obraje to serve in their community by doing light construction and repair. You also will have the opportunity to work with children in the school, developing and practicing their English skills.

Serve in Malawi

Team members will work with children in Madisi (the itinerary is still being finalized). Team members also will partner with volunteer doctors and nurses to address existing health concerns and provide preventive health. Although we are seeking healthcare professionals, you do NOT have to be one to join us – we also need support staff on this trip.

For more information and to request an application for either of these trips, contact Pastor Patrick, or go to our Global Impact Ministry web page.

Tutoring and Other Education Volunteer Opportunities

Phillips at Attucks Elementry School children and staff benefit from volunteer support through tutoring, assisting with the Tiger Incentive Store, and other general volunteer projects. Are you interested in getting involved in the education and lives of these wonderful students? Would you like to help behind the scenes with the weekend Backpack Meal program and other special projects? Please contact Ginna Beckett, RezDT's volunteer coordinator at for more information.

Our collection will go to support the pantry at Reconcilliation Services, one of our FaithWork Partner agencies. The serve lower income and elderly residents on the Eastside of downtown Kansas City.

Final Word

We look forward to serving with you in 2017. I look forward to working with you, your gifts, and your friends to reach our community with the love of Christ. Keep an eye out for the release of our strategic goals and how you might be a part of helping meet them.

Grace and Peace,
