Advent is here! The word "advent" is derived from the latin word Adventus, meaning “coming.” We are preparing for the coming of the Christ-child by adorning the Sanctuary, singing carols of praise, and serving with JOY.
This Sunday we will celebrate in Advent song and we will have trumpet players at our prelude to help us open the season of Advent, so get their early to experience a special beginning to this time of anticipating the coming of Christ. Pastor Adam will lead us in viewing Christmas from a unique perspective this Advent - through the life of John the Baptist, Jesus’ own cousin. The birth of John, who becomes the preparer of the way, is the beginning of the Christmas story. He arrives well before we hear of the shepherds, the magi, or the angels.
God is preparing the way through John, so may our hearts be opened as we experience the joy of Christmas together starting this Sunday!
We are now in our third week of the Cultivate stewardship campaign, which is an invitation for our members to pledged their 2019 gifts to the church as a testimony to their stewardship of God’s gifts to them. Thank you to the many who have already completed a commitment card! Don’t forget to pick up your mug as a token of our thanksgiving for your commitment to God’s mission here at Resurrection.
Currently, after two Sundays, we have received 50% of our pledged giving from membership households totaling 1.1 million in commitments. Our budget in 2018 was 1.9 million, so we've got some work to do. If you call us your church home and have yet to complete your card, please pray about your giving and complete your commitment card online. Cards will also be available Sunday and you can place them in the offering plate. Our response percentage is down due to last Sunday’s blizzard that forced many of us to stay indoors, so please prayerfully consider completing your commitment as soon as you can.
Each week we post the previous Sunday’s sermon on our sermon archives page at cor.org/west/sermons. We know many of you were unable to be in physical worship with us last Sunday, so we want to encourage you to go and experience the message from last week entitled “New Wineskins: Salvation By Grace.”
We also offered a take-a-way action sheet including ways we can Proclaim and Heal our community, as well as a prayer guide that we are inviting you to use daily as we enter into our 2019 FOR EVERY SEASON capital campaign to expand parking, add new entrance/exit, add 200 seats to the Sanctuary, and build a Community Life Center.
If you missed the take-away last weekend, you can pick one up in worship this Sunday at the front desk and join us in weekly devotions now on our new website for prayer, devotion, and information about the forthcoming campaign. We want to begin all we do with prayer and devotion before God. Week one’s devotion highlights our mission ministries, and new devotions will be added each week. You can read this week's devotion here.
Please join me in welcoming our newest staff member, Alec Henn, who will serve as our Graphics & Media Producer. Here is a word from Alec:
I graduated from Northwest Missouri State in April 2018 with a degree in Audio & Video Production. I enjoy creating videos and playing the trumpet. I’m looking forward to using my talents for the church.
Please join me in welcoming Alec to the staff team. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday. Christmas is coming!
